Selling Your Yacht

Selling Your Yacht: A Comprehensive Guide

Selling a yacht successfully requires more than listing it online and waiting for enquiries. The pre-owned yacht market is international, competitive, and driven by presentation, pricing accuracy, and professional representation.

Preparing Your Yacht for Sale

First impressions matter enormously. A well-presented yacht sells faster and commands a stronger price. Before going to market:

  • Complete any outstanding maintenance and address known defects
  • Deep clean the interior and exterior, including upholstery, teak decks, and stainless steel fittings
  • Service all engines and mechanical systems with up-to-date records
  • Organise all documentation — registration papers, survey reports, equipment manuals, and maintenance logs
  • Remove personal belongings and excess clutter

Professional photography and video are essential. High-quality imagery is the single most influential factor in generating initial interest. Your broker will arrange interior and exterior photography, aerial drone footage, and in some cases a walkthrough video.

Pricing Strategy

Setting the right asking price is critical. Your broker will provide a detailed market analysis, taking into account recent comparable sales, current market conditions, the yacht’s age, condition, equipment specification, engine hours, recent refit work, and geographic location.

A realistic asking price attracts qualified buyers and sets the stage for a smooth negotiation. Overpricing leads to prolonged listing periods, which itself becomes a deterrent — buyers question why a vessel has been on the market for an extended time.

The Broker’s Role

Your broker manages every aspect of the sale process:

  • Creating comprehensive marketing materials and listing descriptions
  • Distributing the listing across international platforms and industry databases
  • Qualifying prospective buyers for serious intent and financial capability
  • Coordinating and attending viewings and sea trials
  • Managing negotiations between you and the buyer
  • Overseeing the legal and administrative process through to closing

The broker’s commission is included in the listing price — there is no additional fee charged to the buyer.

Marketing Channels

Effective yacht sales marketing is multi-channel. Your broker will utilise major international listing platforms, the brokerage’s own website and client database, industry co-brokerage networks worldwide, targeted outreach to matching clients, boat show presence where appropriate, and social media and digital advertising.

Viewings and Sea Trials

When a prospective buyer expresses serious interest, your broker arranges a viewing. The yacht should be clean, fully operational, and accessible. First viewings are usually dockside; if the buyer wishes to proceed, a sea trial follows where the vessel is operated under normal conditions.

Offer and Negotiation

Offers are submitted in writing through the buyer’s broker. Negotiation typically covers price, payment terms, included inventory, and conditions such as survey results. Your broker’s experience in negotiation is invaluable — they understand market dynamics and how to structure an agreement that protects your interests.

The Closing Process

  • A purchase agreement is signed by both parties
  • The buyer places a deposit into an independent escrow account
  • The buyer conducts their survey and sea trial
  • Any issues from the survey are negotiated or resolved
  • The balance is transferred to escrow
  • Ownership documents and bill of sale are executed
  • The vessel is delivered and registration transferred

Timeline Expectations

The time to sell varies considerably depending on vessel type, size, condition, asking price, and market conditions. A well-priced yacht in a popular category might attract serious interest within weeks, with the full transaction completing in two to four months. Niche designs or vessels requiring work may need longer. Your broker will provide regular market feedback and recommend adjustments if needed.
